Las sombras / The Shadows is a project about returning to a country that is both yours and not. My father was born in Uruguay and came to France during the military dictatorship. Las sombras explores discovering the ghosts and the unknown. It conveys the feeling of being a stranger in a place you belong and the experience of growing up between two countries, straddling the past and the present. As the Argentinian singer Facundo Cabral says, "No soy de aquí, ni soy de allá" (I am not from here, nor from there).
When I was a child, I used to visit Uruguay to see my family once every two or three years for just a few days. At that time, I didn’t even speak Spanish. In 2020, I went to Buenos Aires, Argentina for an exchange program and started to learn the language, frequently traveling between Argentina and Uruguay. Las sombras began as my memoir and as a work of investigation and reappropriation of my family’s history. Since then, I have been living between France and Uruguay. As my family was divided during the dictatorship, it is through nature and friendship that I have been able to reconnect to my history and, in turn, a part of my identity.
